gravity flow

Water or wastewater flowing from a higher elevation to a lower elevation due to the force of gravity. The water does not flow due to energy provided by a pump. Wherever possible, wastewater collection systems are designed to use the force of gravity to carry waste liquids and solids.

pipe joint

A place where 2 sections of pipe are coupled or joined together.

backhoe

An excavating machine that's bucket is securely attached to a hinged boom and is drawn toward the machine during excavation.

oxidized organics

Organic materials that have been broken down in a biological process. Examples of these materials are carbohydrates and proteins that are broken down to simple sugars.

final backfill

Backfill extending from the top of the initial backfill to the top of the trench. This zone has little influence on pipe performance but can be important to the integrity of roads and structures. Also see backfill and initial backfill.
