anoxic (an-OX-ick)

A condition in which the aquatic (water) environment does not contain dissolved oxygen (DO), which is called an oxygen deficient condition. Generally refers to an environment in which chemically bound oxygen, such as in nitrate, is present. Also see anaerobic.
