COD (chemical oxygen demand) (pronounce as separate letters)
A measure of the oxygen-consuming capacity of the organic matter present in wastewater. COD is the amount of oxygen consumed in milligrams per liter during chemical reactions in a specific test. Results are not necessarily related to the BOD (biochemical oxygen demand) because the reactions may involve substances that bacteria do not stabilize.
