A measure of how heavy a substance (solid, liquid, or gas) is for its size. Density is expressed in terms of weight per unit volume, that is, pounds per cubic foot (lb/ft³) or grams per cubic centimeter (g/cm³). The density of water (at 39°F or 4°C) is about 62.4 lb/ft³ or 1.0 g/cm³.
