energy grade line (EGL)

A line that represents the elevation of the total energy head (in feet or meters) of water flowing in a pipe, conduit, or channel. The EGL represenets the sum of the velocity head, pressure head, and elevation head. The vertical distance between the hygraulic grade line (HGL) represents the velocity head.
