1. A movable, watertight barrier for the control of a liquid in a waterway.
2. A descriptive term used on irrigation distribution piping systems instead of the word valve. Gates cover outlet ports in the pipe segments. Water flows are regulated or distributed by opening the gates by either sliding the gate up or down or by swinging the gate to one side and uncovering an individual port to permit water flow to be discharged or regulated from the pipe at that particular point.
