geographic information system (GIS)

An integrated system of computer hardware, software, and trained personnel linking topographic, demographic, utility, facility, images, and other resource data that are geographically referenced. A GIS is used to help operators and maintenance personnel locate utility system features or structures, such as pipes, valves, and manholes, and to assist with the scheduling and performance of maintenance activities.
