A mineral (glauconite) material that looks like ordinary filter sand except that it is green in color. Greensand is a natural ion exchange material that is capable of softening water. Greensand that has been treated with potassium permanganate (KMnO₄) is called manganese greensand; this product is used to remove iron, manganese, and hydrogen sulfide from groundwaters.
