shock load

A type of flow or pollutant concentration received at a water or wastewater treatment plant in sufficient quantity or strength to momentarily exceed the normal loading ranges. This shock causes problems in treatment processes and requires adjustments to normal operational procedures. Examples include hydraulic or organic overloading or a toxic pollutant in the influent waste stream.
